What was discovered
When light passes through a liquid, a small part is scattered with frequencies shifted by an amount that depends on the molecules' vibrations. Nobel Prize in Physics 1930, the first for an Asian scientist in the sciences.
Landsberg and Mandelstam observed the same phenomenon in quartz in Moscow at almost the same time; the theory had been predicted by Smekal (1923).
