What it is
A French neurotropic virus vaccine applied by scarification, cheap and easy to administer without syringes. It was used on tens of millions of people in French West Africa and drastically reduced epidemics.
It derived from the Sellards and Laigret vaccine (Tunisia, 1932). It caused encephalitis in children and was abandoned in 1982 in favour of Theiler's 17D (New York, 1937).
What it led to
- mass vaccination campaigns in Africa
- the control of urban yellow fever
- logistical experience for later campaigns
