What was discovered
Blood from a Ghanaian patient named Asibi transmitted yellow fever to rhesus monkeys, allowing the virus to be isolated and maintained in the laboratory. The 17D vaccine was derived from this strain.
Stokes died of yellow fever during the research, as did Hideyo Noguchi in Accra in 1928.
What it led to
- an animal model of yellow fever
- Theiler's 17D vaccine (1937)
- the Dakar scratch vaccine
