What it is
A cell with two electrolytes (copper and zinc sulphate) separated by a porous membrane, which avoided polarisation and gave a steady current for hours. It was the power source for the telegraph and for electroplating.
Published in 1836; the Grove cell (1839) and the Bunsen cell (1841) were more powerful variants.
What it led to
- Reliable electric telegraphy
- A standard of electromotive force (the 'volt' was defined in relation to it)
- Industrial electroplating
Built on
- Voltaic pile1800
- Faraday's laws of electrolysis1833-1834
- Faraday's electrochemistry
