What it is

A cadmium-mercury cell that keeps a very stable voltage of 1.018 V, almost independent of temperature. It was the international voltage standard until the Josephson effect replaced it.

What it led to

  • international volt standard (adopted 1908)
  • calibration of voltmeters and potentiometers
  • precision electrical metrology until 1990
