What it is
De Laval built a single-stage turbine with steam nozzles turning up to 30,000 rpm, with a convergent-divergent nozzle developed around 1888. It was the first industrially used impulse steam turbine.
Parsons' reaction turbine (1884) appeared almost simultaneously; the two coexist.
What it led to
- impulse steam turbines (Curtis, Rateau)
- high-speed reduction gears
- centrifuge and generator drives
