What was discovered
The perceived frequency of a wave changes if the source and the observer move relative to one another. Verified with sound by Buys Ballot (1845), it allows velocities to be measured from frequency shift.
Proposed to explain the colour of double stars; Fizeau correctly applied it to light in 1848.
What it led to
- Radial velocities of stars and galaxies (expansion of the universe)
- Doppler radar and sonar
- Doppler ultrasound
- Laser cooling of atoms
Built on
- Wave theory of light and sound
Made possible
- Echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound)29 de octubre de 1953
- Satellite navigation (Transit)1960
- Laser cooling and trapping of atoms1985-1988
- Doppler radar
- Doppler ultrasound
- Detection of exoplanets by radial velocity
