What it is
A portable saw with a narrow blade moving up and down in a reciprocating motion, and a base resting on the workpiece, allowing curves to be cut in wood, metal and plastic. Albert Kaufmann developed it at Scintilla (Switzerland) around 1946.
The attribution to Kaufmann and Scintilla rests on company histories of Scintilla and Bosch (which acquired it); the 1946-1947 date has not been checked against primary documents.
