What it is

A power tool whose head oscillates at high speed and small angle, cutting, sanding and scraping with interchangeable attachments without the blade rotating. Fein launched it in 1967 and it spread to renovation and carpentry.

The oscillating saw for cutting plaster casts was developed by Homer Stryker in 1947 in Kalamazoo (Michigan); the Fein date and its character as the first multi-function tool rest on company history and are not cross-checked.

What it led to

  • flush cuts and cuts in tight places in renovation
  • do-it-yourself oscillating multi-tools
  • the plaster-cast saw for orthopaedics
