What it is
Moriondo patented in Turin the first device for brewing coffee in batches with steam and pressurised water, though not yet per individual cup. The modern one-cup-at-a-time espresso machine was developed by Luigi Bezzera (patent 1901-1902) and Desiderio Pavoni, who mass-produced it from 1903 under the La Pavoni brand.
Moriondo is 'certainly one of the earliest, if not the earliest' to patent a machine of this kind, but his design brewed several cups per batch; the individual-cup format recognisable as the modern espresso came with Bezzera and Pavoni two decades later.
What it led to
- The single-cup espresso machine (Bezzera-Pavoni, 1901-1903)
- Italian espresso bar culture
- The worldwide espresso coffee industry
