What was discovered
Euler proved that the orthocenter, circumcenter and centroid of any non-equilateral triangle are collinear, a line that bears his name. The result was published in 1767, though the finding is dated to 1765, and it opened up research into other notable points lying on that line.
What it led to
- Identification of other notable points on the line (nine-point center, de Longchamps point, etc.)
- Generalization to quadrilaterals and tetrahedra
