What was discovered
By applying coal tar to rabbits' ears for months, they induced malignant tumours in the laboratory for the first time. It demonstrated that certain chemical substances cause cancer.
The 1926 Nobel Prize went to Fibiger for a later-disproved parasitic theory of cancer, rather than to Yamagiwa.
What it led to
- identification of chemical carcinogens (benzopyrene, 1933)
- experimental oncology
