What it is
At his holiday cottage in Marykirk Blyth set up a vertical-axis cloth-sailed turbine that charged accumulators and powered the house lighting. It is considered the first wind turbine to generate electricity.
Blyth tested it in July 1887; Brush's Cleveland wind turbine (1888) was larger and better known.
