What it is
A turbine with a 17 m rotor and 144 cedar blades that fed 408 batteries and lit Brush's mansion. It was the first large wind turbine in the United States.
It operated about twenty years as a battery charger; its real output was low because of the slow rotor.
What it led to
- a precedent for the La Cour and Smith-Putnam turbines
- electrification of Midwestern ranches
- larger-scale wind generation
