What it is
A tightly woven cotton or wool twill whose yarns are waterproofed before weaving, repelling water while letting air through. It was patented in 1888 and used for raincoats, uniforms and First World War trench coats.
Burberry developed gabardine around 1879 and patented it in 1888; twill had long been used under other names.
What it led to
- field coats and polar expeditions (Scott, Amundsen)
- military and civilian trench coats
- breathable rainwear before modern membranes
