What it is
In 1826 Sharp built in Northampton a cooker fuelled by coal gas, with an oven. It was the first gas cooker, which spread in urban homes from the late 19th century.
The 1826 date rests on the Northampton gasworks tradition; commercialisation came in 1836 (Aldermanbury, London) and mass adoption after 1880.
What it led to
- domestic and catering gas cookers
- abandonment of coal and wood cooking
- urban gas distribution networks
