What it is
An interpolation method in computer graphics that computes lighting at the vertices of a polygon mesh and linearly interpolates it per pixel, achieving continuous shading on curved surfaces simulated with polygons; published by Henri Gouraud in 1971 at the University of Utah.
What it led to
- Efficient continuous shading in early 3D graphics
- A standard technique in early graphics engines and graphics cards
- The basis for the later Phong shading
