What it is
A machine that imitates bobbin lace by twisting threads around the warp to form hexagonal net. It was the first successful lace machine and drastically cut the price of lace.
The patent dates from 1808 and the factory was set up in Loughborough; in 1816 a Luddite mob destroyed 55 machines and Heathcoat moved the business to Tiverton, Devon.
What it led to
- cheap net for veils, dresses and mosquito nets
- Leavers lace machine (1813) which refined the process
- move of the industry to Tiverton after the Luddite attack (1816)
