What it is
Lace made only with needle and thread, stitch by stitch over a design, without a supporting cloth, which grew out of cutwork and drawn-thread embroidery. Sixteenth-century Venetian pattern books spread it across Europe.
Needle lace and bobbin lace appear almost simultaneously in Italy and Flanders (early 16th century); priority is disputed. Venetian pattern books of c. 1530-1560 give the first clear evidence.
What it led to
- lace as a court luxury (ruffs, collars, cuffs) across Europe
- printed pattern books that standardised European designs
- Alençon, Burano and other needle-lace centres
