What it is
A portable ambulatory electrocardiography device that records the heart's electrical activity for at least 24 hours via chest electrodes, useful for detecting occasional arrhythmias that are hard to capture during a brief consultation.
Holter developed the concept in the late 1940s and refined it through the 1950s into practical clinical use.
What it led to
- Standard ambulatory diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias
- Long-term cardiac event monitors (weeks or months)
