What it is
An articulated bogie placed between two railcars instead of one under each car, spreading their combined weight and giving a smooth ride without the weight and drag of a bogie per car; used on articulated trains and tramway vehicles.
Patented by Wilhelm Jakobs in Germany (granted 10 April 1901) and filed in Austria on 8 August 1901 (granted 1903); 1932 is the first use on a high-speed train (Fliegender Hamburger).
What it led to
- lighter articulated trains with a smoother ride
- adoption in trams and modern articulated units
- a modified two-wheel version used by Talgo trains
- reduced hunting oscillation in high-speed trains
