What it is
A padlock whose body is made of riveted steel laminations, cheaper and stronger than cast-iron or brass ones. Harry Soref developed it after seeing how easily the padlocks of the time broke.
The patent for laminated construction was granted in 1924 and that for the dial combination lock in 1930.
What it led to
- cheap, strong padlocks for mass consumption
- lockers, bicycles and storerooms with their own lock
- dial combination padlocks
