What was discovered
A test section from Seebach to Wettingen with single-phase alternating current at 15 kV and low frequency through a single overhead line. It gave rise to the 15 kV 16.7 Hz system of Switzerland, Germany and Austria.
Oerlikon, and others such as Siemens and AEG in Germany, developed the system almost simultaneously; the frequency of 15 and later 16.7 Hz was fixed between 1912 and 1913.
What it led to
- the 15 kV 16.7 Hz system in Central Europe
- single-phase commutator locomotives
- electrification of the Gotthard line
