⚠️ Disputed: the sources disagree.

What it is

A phone with a built-in 0.35-megapixel digital camera, sold in Korea in June 2000, that stored about 20 pictures. It began the convergence of phone and camera that ended the compact camera.

Priority is contested: Samsung released the SCH-V200 in 2000, but Sharp launched the J-SH04 in Japan (November 2000), the first to send photos over the network, and Philippe Kahn shared a photo from his phone in 1997 with a homemade rig.

What it led to

  • the smartphone camera
  • social photography and instant image sharing
  • decline of the digital compact camera
