What it is

Schweigger surrounded a magnetised needle with many turns of wire, multiplying Ørsted's effect so that weak currents became visible. It was the first sensitive instrument for measuring electric current.

What it led to

  • astatic (Nobili) and mirror (Thomson) galvanometers
  • quantitative measurements for Ohm's law
  • coil ammeters and voltmeters
