What it is
With laser light and an inclined reference beam, Leith and Upatnieks separate the holographic image from the direct light and obtain the first three-dimensional holograms of real objects. It made Gabor's holography useful.
The work was presented in 1962 at an Optical Society meeting and published in 1963-64 with 3D images; at Michigan they worked on synthetic-aperture radar.
What it led to
- security and art holograms
- holographic interferometry and non-destructive testing
- holographic optical data storage
