What it is
A technique that uses low-coherence interferometry to obtain tissue cross-sections with micron resolution, without contact. It was first applied to the retina and is now routine in ophthalmology.
Fercher (Vienna, 1988) had measured the eye's length with low-coherence interferometry; Huang and Fujimoto published the imaging method in Science in 1991.
What it led to
- diagnosis of glaucoma and macular degeneration
- coronary and tissue imaging
- OCT angiography
