What it is
The Bavarian brewmaster brewed in Pilsen a clear, golden lager by combining lightly kilned malt, Žatec hops and bottom-fermenting yeast. It was the first clear pale beer in history.
The first batch was brewed on 5 October 1842 and served on 11 November at the Burghers' Brewery. Low-temperature English malting and Bavarian lager yeasts already existed; the novelty was the combination.
What it led to
- the pilsner style, the most widespread in the world
- glassware use, thanks to the beer's clarity
- industrialisation of Czech and German brewing
