What it is
Smith fused a DNA fragment to the coat protein gene of a filamentous phage, so that the peptide appears on the virus surface. This makes it possible to select binding proteins from libraries of billions of variants.
2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Smith and Winter, with Arnold).
What it led to
- fully human antibodies such as adalimumab (Humira)
- directed evolution of proteins in the laboratory
- discovery of peptides and target-binding drugs
