What it is
After observing how a helmsman steers, Minorsky formulated a control law with proportional, integral and derivative terms for a ship's autopilot. He tested it on USS New Mexico and it is the origin of PID control.
He published his analysis in 1922 in the Journal of the American Society of Naval Engineers; modern tuning (Ziegler-Nichols) dates from 1942.
What it led to
- ship autopilots with automatic heading correction
- industrial PID controllers
- control theory and stability of feedback systems
