What was discovered
The study of properties invariant under projection, with points at infinity and the theorem of two triangles in perspective. Born from painters' perspective, it was refounded by Poncelet and unified the geometries in the Erlangen programme.
Desargues's work was lost and was rediscovered in 1845 by Chasles.
