What was discovered
Ptolemy synthesised Greek astronomy into a mathematical system of epicycles, deferents and equants capable of predicting planetary positions with precision. It dominated the worldview for fourteen centuries.
It includes a catalogue of 1,022 stars derived largely from Hipparchus's.
