What was discovered
A proposal for a quantum computer in which the qubits are the nuclear spins of phosphorus atoms implanted in silicon, controlled with electrodes. It linked quantum computing with semiconductor technology and launched a decades-long programme in Australia.
The proposal appeared in Nature in 1998. Kane was then at UNSW, where devices such as the single-atom transistor (2012) were later built.
What it led to
- silicon qubits, UNSW and Silicon Quantum Computing programmes
- engineering of single atoms in silicon
- quantum computing approaches compatible with the chip industry
