What it is
A Buddhist canon carved on 81,258 wooden printing blocks on Ganghwa Island during the Mongol invasions, with almost no errors. It is the oldest complete woodblock edition of the canon to survive, and is kept in buildings designed to ventilate the blocks naturally.
It replaces a first edition of 1087 burned by the Mongols in 1232.
What it led to
- the reference text of the Buddhist canon in East Asia
- the basis of the Taishō edition (1924-1934)
- passive wood preservation in the Janggyeong Panjeon depositories
