What it is
An experimental vessel with three turbines driving three shafts at 34 knots, which gatecrashed the 1897 Spithead naval review to show it outpaced any warship. It began the age of the turbine in navies.
Cavitation forced the use of three propellers per shaft; Dreadnought (1906) was the first battleship with turbines.
What it led to
- turbine destroyers and cruisers
- the liners Lusitania and Mauretania
- geared marine turbines
