What it is
A mobile broadband service in the 2.3 GHz band launched commercially in Seoul in June 2006, developed by ETRI and Samsung from the IEEE 802.16e standard. It was the world's first commercial mobile-WiMAX-type mobile broadband network.
WiBro was shown publicly at APEC Busan (2005) and entered commercial service in 2006; the technology was folded into the global mobile WiMAX standard (802.16e). LTE ultimately displaced it.
What it led to
- roll-out of mobile WiMAX worldwide
- Korean experience preceding 4G LTE
- high-speed mobile data on Seoul public transport
