What it is
Hood's team replaced the radioactive labels of Sanger sequencing with four fluorescent dyes and detected the fragments with a laser as they migrated through the gel. Applied Biosystems marketed it in 1986–1987 as the ABI 370A, and it automated reading DNA.
Smith et al. published in Nature (1986); Wilhelm Ansorge (EMBL, Heidelberg) presented in parallel a semi-automatic fluorescent system (1986–1987).
What it led to
- ABI 3700 capillary sequencers and the Human Genome Project
- industrial sequencing of bacterial and eukaryotic genomes
- data-quality frameworks (Phred) and bioinformatics
