What it is

An integrated system of metal type cast in a hand mould, oil-based ink, and a screw press adapted from wine presses, enabling texts to be reproduced identically and cheaply. The 42-line Bible (c. 1455) inaugurates the culture of the printed book.

Movable-type precedents exist in China (Bi Sheng, 11th century) and Korea (Jikji, 1377), but the European system developed independently. Laurens Coster of Haarlem was claimed as the inventor by Dutch tradition, without solid evidence. Merged with «Movable-type metal printing press» (duplicate, 23 September 2026).

  • The birth of the publishing industry and the information market
  • The fixing of vernacular languages and of the modern bureaucratic state
  • The Protestant Reformation, vernacular Bibles and the wars of religion
  • mass literacy, public opinion and the scientific revolution
  • the standardisation of national languages and of knowledge
