What it is
The first Chinese printed atlas, reducing Zhu Siben's large map (c. 1320) to a set of sheets with grid, scale and conventional symbols. It became the model of Chinese mapmaking for two centuries.
Luo Hongxian finished it around 1541 and it was printed in 1555; Zhu Siben's map (about 1311-1320) is lost. Later editions added sheets.
What it led to
- printed circulation of administrative maps in Ming and Qing China
- a regional atlas format with grid rooted in Pei Xiu's tradition
