What was discovered
A list of open problems that set the agenda for 20th-century mathematics: the continuum hypothesis, the consistency of arithmetic, the Riemann hypothesis, transcendence, the tenth problem on Diophantine equations, the axiomatisation of physics.
Hilbert presented only 10 problems in the lecture; all 23 appear in the printed version.
What it led to
- Gödel's theorems
- computability theory (the tenth problem, Matiyasevich 1970)
- Gelfond-Schneider theory
- the Millennium Problems (2000)
