What was discovered
The Kitab al-jabr wa-l-muqabala classifies and solves all linear and quadratic equations by means of two operations (restoring and balancing), with geometric justification. It founds algebra as an independent discipline and gives it its name.
His other treatise, on calculation with Indian numerals, gave rise to the word algorithm.
